FLO Studio

Exploration, experimentation and speculative performance

FLO Studio is an exploratory strand of the Female Laptop Orchestra (FLO) dedicated to the development of new performance formats, instruments, and interaction paradigms for contemporary music.

While FLO Lab focuses on evaluating emerging technologies through artistic practice, FLO Studio investigates what new forms of performance may become possible when artists collaborate directly with engineers, researchers, and experimental technologies. Work in this strand operates at the intersection of music performance, artificial intelligence, robotics, and interactive systems. Rather than treating technology purely as a tool, FLO Studio explores how emerging systems can function as creative partners, autonomous agents, or responsive environments within live and Networked Music Performance contexts.

Current areas of exploration include:

  • Distributed and telematic ensemble architectures
  • AI-assisted and hybrid human–machine performance systems
  • Robotic and electromechanical sound-producing instruments
  • Embodied and gestural interfaces for music performance
  • Installation-based and self-sustaining performance environments

Participation in FLO Studio is project-specific and optional. Small teams of FLO members collaborate with external partners depending on the artistic and technical requirements of each project.

Projects developed under FLO Studio are exploratory by design and often emerge through collaborations with research institutions, artists, and technology developers. Activities typically take place through artistic residencies, research partnerships, and exploratory commissions. Outcomes may include experimental performances, prototypes, installations, or reflective research documentation. These projects prioritise inquiry and experimentation over finished products, allowing new artistic and technological ideas to be tested within real creative contexts.
